January is a busy month at the Greenhills Fire Department. Each year, our budget committee gets the year off to a good start, financially, by setting the budget based on the requests of the other department committees. This task has become extremely important as the purse strings tighten and the costs rise for the items we all use on a daily basis (fuel, electric, squad supplies, etc). The Officers hold a session to discuss what projects or special training that they would like to undertake in the coming year and narrow the ideas down to an ambitious, yet achievable list of goals. It is that list along with the everyday goals of the department, that guides us as we strive to improve service to our community in 2008.
January’s freezing temperatures made firefighting and EMS work even more hazardous than usual. There were several fires in neighboring communities where our help was requested and gladly given. Our volunteers assisted the Forest Park and other neighboring fire departments on the morning of January 24th with a structure fire on Reliance Dr. in which a 62 year-old man died. Earlier in the month, fire broke out at a vacant home in Forest Park. Several area departments were called in to help combat the flames. At one point, a “mayday” was called when a Forest Park firefighter fell through a floor that was weakened by fire. Uninjured, he quickly made his way to safety and remained on the scene to continue the firefighting effort. Closer to home, on January 20th, our volunteers and the Forest Park FD stopped a chimney fire on Damon Rd. before it got out of hand. Fortunately, no injuries, however, a lot of soot resulted. Any fire chief will tell you, when you’re battling fire AND the cold, manpower is at a premium.
Terri Essert announced that our annual GFD Blood drive will be held on February 9th from 10am till 3pm at the firehouse. Founded in 1938 (the same year as GFD), Hoxworth Blood Center is the only blood center for the greater Cincinnati area. Serving a 15-county area in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana, Hoxworth collects, tests, processes and distributes blood and blood components to 25 hospitals. Join our volunteers as we support this life-saving institution by giving blood. You can make an appointment by calling Terri Essert @ 233-5566 or Beth Gentry @ 825-7719. Walk-ins will also be welcome.
The day after our hearts were busy pumping blood for the blood drive, our volunteers and their spouses and guests will celebrate the heart at our annual Valentine’s breakfast. This is a great tradition that brings together the current members and retirees for breakfast and some “catching up” with friends.
Please look at your address markings from the street and ask yourself if it can be easily seen by an ambulance crew or police officer in the event of an emergency at your house. A clear, easy to read address can save precious seconds when seconds count.
